I think that it is interesting that the introduction starts out with the question "Is it possible in the early twenty-first century to distinguish between social realities and the media forms that represent them?" Images flood and saturate every aspect of our lives, these days. I guess what I get from this question is the old adage "does art imitate life, or does life imitate art?"
I also think it is interesting to see how our understanding of what culture means has evolved, over the years. What used to mean the elite, or the opposite of elite of our society now rises to encompass all aspects of what contributes to culture. As stated in page 2, we now have what is referred to as Cultural Studies. Essentially, culture can now be described as the way we make sense out of things, both within and without a group and even comparing to other groups.
On page four, it says that culture is a process, so it is constantly evolving and is hard to pin down, as a definition.
There is a lot covered in a short amount of time in this introduction. I am looking forward to learning about all the ways that different forms of culture can be influenced by visual media, being a graphic designer.
